Sleepless in Calcutta - A Review

Had Philip Kotler and Abraham Maslov attended Sleepless in Calcutta - a programme organised by the alumni of Bharathidasan institute of Management Trichy and Businessworld at Inox Forum- they would have probably have chosen movies to express their management theories.
For, the differentiating line between the science and the art of management and the science and art of movies were blurred by the speakers, for the benefit of the audiences, at the event. How dialogues have subtle theories and practices of management significance, especially soft skills , were brought under the spotlight at the programme, probably the first of its kind in a movie hall.
The speakers , all self confessed movie maniacs, used Ben Hur, Gone with The Wind, Gandhi and The Wizard of Oz to elucidate their points.
Who could have thought that The Wizard of Oz was actually a good motivator, and not a terror as the movie initially portrays, but Mr. Atul Chaturvedi, COO of Bharti Televentures for the North east. Playing final clips of the movie - where wizard shows the way to the other characters- the COO explained how being a good leader means staying in the background yet motivating the team members.
" Let them(team members) take the steps. You have to suggest rather than direct and let the person do the job. Allow them to make small mistakes because in the end when the work is completed, the employees will feel more achieved than what they would do if you had directed them through the process."
Not only Hollywood classics, even Bollywood movies have pointers of management, marketing to be precise, in them. Thus proved Mr. Shiloo Chattopadhyay, Director of MODE. Using clips from Deewar where Amitabh Bachan purchases a building for more than its worth to gift to his mother, the " perpetual student of marketing" pointed out that a transaction has intrinsic and different values to the buyer and the seller." Perceived value of a product differs from person to person,"he saidand added that this is how the concepts of a product bein "costly" or "cheap" varies from one seller to another and even from the manufacturer to the seller.
The practicality of the event was perhaps best brought to the fore by the BIM Director, Prof. M.Sankaran. Referring to clips from the movie Zanjeer , where the speaker- Senior General Manager of Eveready , Ms. Madhumita Basu- had explained the consequence of a corporate vision statement, he said," I have spent as many as 8 hours in the classroom sessions trying to explain what a vision statement is. But even after that the students have not been able to grasp I properly. But one clipping and everyone here has a firm grasp on what a vision statement is and should be"

Sleepless in Calcutta

Its always a great feeling when you do something for your alma matter which has helped you reach top a respectable position in the society.. thats my feeling when I work for the event " Sleepless in Calcutta" , a event relating to the management concepts which can be unearthed from the popular movies. And also I feel this will be the first management seminar to be held in a movie hall... We are organising this event on the behalf of the Bharathidasan Institute of Management Trichy Alumni Association (Calcutta Chapter).
The event will take place in Inox at Forum Mall in Calcutta. We have invited three speakers who will take movie clips from various popular movies and elucidate the management concepts hidden in them.
The main brain behind the event is Abhisek from the 16th batch of BIM who has been sleepless for the past 2 months to organise this event. The event is on 22nd January Sunday.

Guys Must be Crazy

“These Guys must be crazy yaar”, Asha suddenly remarked while adoring herself in the mirror.

Her roommate priya who was busily playing Minesweeper in her laptop, turned to Asha and asked, “c’mon, ma’m wat happened..you talking about Guys suddenly……watz the matter?”

Asha : True yaar, these guys must be crazy…… I think they do all sort of stupid things if they fall in love
Priya : aaha, Asha…what happened pa, suddenly you talking about love…who is that idiot ? Asha : Hey keep quiet ok! Me already in anger……. You don’t try to tease me further
Priya : hahaha, you angry… see yourself in the mirror…… your drooling is quite apparent… Tell me whoz that guy who made you talk about love all of the sudden
Asha : our next cubicle northie yaar, Vikram I mean…… He is following me wherever I go
Priya (surprised) : What you mean Vikram? Hey come so many girls in our office are drooling about him…….. don’t just blush ok? You shouldn’t lie too much esp when you are seeing urself in the mirror
Asha : hey come on yaar, you know, that day in FC, I went to wash my hands. All other taps were free only. But this guy purposely waited and came to the tap where I washed my hands after I went…
Priya : hmmph.. Big deal……. This is more feebler than BSNL signal… (shakes her head) I cant accept this as a Love signal
Asha : wait wait. Even I didn’t think it as a big issue. But yesterday no, after finished with my dinner, I missed my mobile in the desk while leaving. When I came back to pick it up, I noticed this Vikram picking up my paper towel and put in his pocket. What would you say for this? Priya : Really??? Do u mean it
Asha : hey true yaar…… thatz why I said…… these guys are all crazy…… they tend to do all sorts of stupid things for love and romance
Priya : aah..dont tell me you didn’t like that
Asha : hehe thatz a different story J ….. you come with me to Food court today.. I’ll show you live action today

That afternoon........Priya and Asha dine together in the Food court. Vikram who enters the Food court at the same time, takes the seat just behind them.

Asha : Look where he is sitting
Priya : O.K O.K.. Relax Both finish their lunch and go to wash their hand.

As they return they see Vikram standing near the place where they had their lunch

Asha : Now see what he does
Priya : Wait , wait
Vikram looks here and there, after getting convinced no one is around, picks up the tumbler that was used by Asha during her lunch.
Asha : (triumphant smile) What do yaa say now?
Priya : Yep yep, Guys must be crazy only…… I will go and catch that Vikram red handedly Asha : hey relax priya, Me feeling shy
Priya : hello this is not a murali film story to keep postponing love proposal until a railway station climax. You just wait here
Priya straightly goes to Vikram, who is quiet surprised to see her..
Vikram : Hi priya..how do u do
Priya : Dei, what are u doing da
Vikram : err..whatz the matter pri?
Priya : Watz the tumbler u are holding in ur hand
Vikram : oh this one ah? This is your friend Asha’s work. Arrey, she is so careless yaar… Whenever she goes to wash her hands in the wash basin, she leaves the tap open and let water go waste. She never disposes of the paper towel, once she is done with lunch and leaves it there itself. See even now, she doesn’t even care to keep the tumbler back in the place. How many times you expect me to keep reminding in mails as part of the cleanliness initiative of the week. Nobody cares.. see, for being a volunteer what sort of job I have to do. Regardless of the number of posts in the bulletin about etiquette nobody cares to listen…”

Saying this, a disgusted vikram goes to pick up the tumbler in the next desk. An apparently shocked Asha could not mutter any other words except mumbling
“GUYS MUST BE REALLY CRAZY……………..”

(Thanks to my friend Zaheer Abbas for sending this one.. I really liked this one , so it finds a place here)

Happy New Year 2006

Hope everyone reading this piece of writing had a great new year bash....!!!

My new year did not start on a great note.. what would say when you go to a disc and your entry is turned down even though you had an invite from the Disc but you did not have a girl who can accompany you.. I faced just the same, I had gone to one of the famous joints to celebrate the new year but only to be turned down as I did not have a female partner.. Though much is spoken about discrimination of women no one really comes forward to speak for men...
Ok lets leave that.. let me atleast follow my new year resolution " Think Positive"
How do I take this positively..?
  • I was not allowed 'coz they did not want me to waste my energy
  • T was not allowed 'coz the security felt I was too good to drink

And you guys can pour in your grey cells so that I may be able to get a " positive" thing out of this episode.

Otherwise it was a great beginning ...And hope this year fulfills all our dreams and hopes.

The days so far !!!

Its been seven months since i came to Calcutta, these months have been a period of learning and transition from th epampered, looked after public school kid to that of independent, and more confident individual that I am today.I wonder if the same thing would have happened if I had been in Chennai or Bangalore instead of Calcutta. In Chennai or Bangalore I would still be under the wings of so many who care about me. But Calcutta where I had been left to fend for myself has taught me just not only life but something more than that.this City of joy, which was the place of all the sorrows in the beginning of june when I landed here first has taught me the sweet essence of life in the months I have been here.
The city , like anyother has its own ups , downs , woes, and worries. The city through the eyes of a new comer is nothing more than a sleeping city with full of poverty and red politics, but as you stay here for a extended period of time , one learns to see the joyful part of the city. There's more harmony in everything thats found in Calcutta than anyother city that I have visited.Everything here is exciting , the peolpe , the climate, the roads and of course the puja pandals.Theres always a celebration in the inds of the people , its either the celebration of the religion, or views or art. The life in Calcutta suddenly seems to be a long festive season. As, I take the Metro everyday to office , i realise that it would be tough to commute through the local transport when I go to places like Chennai or Bangalore. It would be tough to miss the comfort of the Metro , the fun at the pubs and ofcourse the laid back attitude that exists here .But all these comes at a price, the sky rocketing mobile bills, unpalatable mustard oil cooked food, and of course missing the people I love the most.
Does this all equate to the gains from the city, I feel certainly not. Whatever the condition be, whatever the reason be, I always miss my home and will always wait for a chance to be there. Whatever we earn, whatever we learn , its all to live life.
So live life kingsize !!!!
