Celebrations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A winter evening.
Four friends.
Raindrops.
Four cups of tea.

Hundred bucks of gas.
A rusty old bike.
And an open road.

Maggi noodles.
A hostel room.
4.25 a.m.

3 old friends.
3 separate cities.
3 coffee mugs.
1 internet messenger.

Rain on a hot tin roof.
Pakoras deep-frying.
Neighbours dropping in.
A party.

You and mom.
A summer night.
A bottle of coconut oil.
A head massage.
Gossiping about absent family members.

You can spend Millions on occassions but to celebrate all you have to do is spend your Time ..

A Very Happy New Year to all of you. May all your dreams come true . God Bless!!!

A wonderful piece, Thanks to Anupama for sending me this

Nothing Frivolous. Only Serious: The battle for free newspapers

Nothing Frivolous. Only Serious: The battle for free newspapers

Reading this entry , its quite interesting why in India we have not tried the free newspaper route.

Let me think aloud why the free newspaper route may not work in India

Quality of the paper will have to take a beating, as anyone and everyone will pick your paper. Now here the question arises, what do we mean by quality and 'everyone will pick your paper'.

When we talk about the quality of the paper , it dwells on the fact about how a newspaper is being produced, the low costs today atleast help the newspapers manage some part of cost involved in talking the papers to the readers. In today's scenario there are little too strong competition in the country for a new entrant to come in and survive.

THen what do we mean by ''everyone will pick your paper', it talks about the quality of readership, today the major fighting ground for the print media is to garner maximum readership among the classes that actually spend defined clearly by Socio Economic Classifications, so when we are talking about SECs , how will we make our free paper to reach the right audience in a larger scale. This is the major reason why an Anna nagar times or a Noida times can exist in smaller location but not on a major scale

I Me Myself!!!

......."newspaper business has an inbuilt system to take care of this. journalists like to call that a chinese wall, or lakshman rekha, between the editorial and ad departments. for those in the editorial department, reader is the customer, and it is him, and only him they have to serve. for the ad guys, advertiser is the customer. the job of the management is to make sure that these two serve their respective customers without breaching the wall......."

this is an interesting observation on the media industry, being a relatively new insider in the media biz , i completely agree with the fact that 'lakshman rekha' or the 'chinese wall' has to be maintained and following that or not is totally depends on the top management. So today you will always find a newspaper who will write anything to satisfy an advertiser and in turn get more revenue and papers that have a wall built between the ad dept and the editorial.

More over the scope of media companies have gone beyond serving the people with latest news, its much more than news , entertainment.today the print media has very many competitors, they range from the other players in print media, tv, radio, outdoor medium like the one you find in krishna sweets or Mc Donalds, those large display syou find in malls, sms, internet, and growing by the day.

These new media which have sprung up only put the print business in not so favourable light, thats one of the major reason why these days the 'traditionally print majors' have gone in for investment in various other media, like radio, television, internet. And also led companies to find other sources of revenue from the print , like books ( the B-School guide from Businessworld, the speaking tree from Times of India, and so on)

though the comfort zone of the advertisers in print has been breached , no doubt print will always remain to rule the roost and continue to grow in this very competitive media world..

MURPHY's Laws on Girls!

Murphy's laws on girls.....

1. If u think a girl is beautiful, she'll always have a boyfriend
to confirm that

2. the nicer she is...the quicker u will be dumped!!!!!

3. The more the makeup, worse the looks...

4. "99% of the girls in this world are beautiful. Remaining 1%
would always be in your company.".................100% true

5. The guy standing next to a beautiful girl can never be her
brother.

6. If by any chance the girl you like , likes you too, she will
let you know in about 10 years from now ,when you are committed..

7. The more you ignore a girl, the more she'll want to be friends
with you.

8. Theory of relativity......

The more u run towards a hot chick....the more she goes away from u...

9. Rule 1:
Even if you got her out alone... just when you are about to let her know about your feelings...she will spot a long lost friend( I guess from Kumbh ka Mela)

Corollary to rule 1:
The more desperate you are to tell your feelings to a girl on a private chat, the more probability the long lost friend she discovered is a handsome superman, who beats you in everything 9:1

Axiom 1:
The more dedicated you are to the girl, the longer it takes before things work out, but ultimately it will (somesmile for the guys)

10. the day the chick you really like comes and speaks to you
will be the day when-1. You are dressed badly 2. You forgot to brush your teeth for the first time in your life 3.Have a bad hair day

11. all the good girls are either nuns or married .the rest gonaround with u and ruin ur money, health and leave u a total wreck.

12. the more seriously u like a girl...the more seriously her dad will hate

13. the love you shower a girl with is directly proportional to the number of bullets her dad will be showering at you

How true.... Long live Murphy

I Me Myself!!!

Ganges- the event on Ganges and its influence on human life, organised by the Alumni association at Calcutta was held on 7th October.

It was ver well received by the audience, actually we had more than 100 people in audience, though the total capacity was only 80.We had to turn down few people due to lack of space. Out of the 100 present in the boat ,36 were paid audience, who paid 500 rs each for the programme.

It was a lifetime experience as well as a learning for all of us in the team. The boat was beautifully decorated with the colors of the festival season, red and yellow. We also had a stunning background and also a green room made for the dancers from the Tanushree Sankar dance company who did a splendid job of bringing the emotions of the season and the river by their choreography.

The boat set sail from the Jetty No 1 near Eden Gardens and went upstream, showing the splendour of Calcutta along the banks , going under the magnificient and grand Howrah bridge and beyond Belur Math.

The speakers were a rare combination.

Dr Rudrangshu Mukherjee, Editor, The Telegraph had strong views about Ganges and its influence in the life.

Anjan Mitra, an arcitect with INTACH ,spoke about the architecture along the banks of the river.

Prof.Prashanta Roy, HOD, Sociology & Pol.Science ,Presidency College spoke about Ganges as a metaphor and its influence in the languages.

Our very own Alumni and Prof, Prof. Nagarani, compered the event .

Alumni President, Siddharthan also took to the stage and interacted with the audience and talked about BIM and the alumni association.

The audience were a collection of bureaucrats , educationist, royalty, environmentalists & journalists.

Delhi

Even after the two days of rains in Delhi nothing has changed in the weather, its back to the humid and very uncomfortable days. So as many of you should be doing, staying all day in office was a better solution to face the heat of the afternoon sun, well even I tried that way only to find myself too bored and depressed and also it was unhealthy to both my health and health of my profession as a marketer. So back I am on the fields braving the heat and humidity of the Delhi. But now that I have seen both the extremes of Delhi, I understand it’s the specialty of Delhi and way the nature wants to train its people to face the world. I think I should do a little research on “if the climatic conditions have any connections to the way people behave in a particular place”. My arguments supporting this will be the behavior of people in Delhi, a little harsh, a sort of rough and tough like the weather and the behavior and that of the behavior of the people from Coimbatore, where the people are a soft and pleasant of course like the weather always any one who has enough time and energy can do a bit of more study on this and may let me know.

After seeing the scenes of Mumbai blast(thanks to the news channels who on their fight to increase the TRPs showed us the most comprehensive footages), I just feel helpless, helpless for being in a country that in the name of being a peace loving nation fails to take the necessary action to curb those element who distort the peace. Can we just take some action against those elements like how the countries in the West Asia react to? Just see the same news what Israel has done to Lebanon for killing its soldiers. Can we not react or retaliate in the same way against the elements that we think are responsible, instead of just walking out of meetings or condemning in the public? When is India going to get a strong backbone and stand up strong against the acts of terrorism?

Thinking more on this India cannot retaliate like Israel because;
1. Israel is far more superior to its neighbours in terms of military strength, whereas if we consider India it’s a question concerning the neighbour is a country with nuclear capability.
2. Israel has full backing of Washington, which India can only dream of.

Sleepless in Calcutta - A Review

Had Philip Kotler and Abraham Maslov attended Sleepless in Calcutta - a programme organised by the alumni of Bharathidasan institute of Management Trichy and Businessworld at Inox Forum- they would have probably have chosen movies to express their management theories.
For, the differentiating line between the science and the art of management and the science and art of movies were blurred by the speakers, for the benefit of the audiences, at the event. How dialogues have subtle theories and practices of management significance, especially soft skills , were brought under the spotlight at the programme, probably the first of its kind in a movie hall.
The speakers , all self confessed movie maniacs, used Ben Hur, Gone with The Wind, Gandhi and The Wizard of Oz to elucidate their points.
Who could have thought that The Wizard of Oz was actually a good motivator, and not a terror as the movie initially portrays, but Mr. Atul Chaturvedi, COO of Bharti Televentures for the North east. Playing final clips of the movie - where wizard shows the way to the other characters- the COO explained how being a good leader means staying in the background yet motivating the team members.
" Let them(team members) take the steps. You have to suggest rather than direct and let the person do the job. Allow them to make small mistakes because in the end when the work is completed, the employees will feel more achieved than what they would do if you had directed them through the process."
Not only Hollywood classics, even Bollywood movies have pointers of management, marketing to be precise, in them. Thus proved Mr. Shiloo Chattopadhyay, Director of MODE. Using clips from Deewar where Amitabh Bachan purchases a building for more than its worth to gift to his mother, the " perpetual student of marketing" pointed out that a transaction has intrinsic and different values to the buyer and the seller." Perceived value of a product differs from person to person,"he saidand added that this is how the concepts of a product bein "costly" or "cheap" varies from one seller to another and even from the manufacturer to the seller.
The practicality of the event was perhaps best brought to the fore by the BIM Director, Prof. M.Sankaran. Referring to clips from the movie Zanjeer , where the speaker- Senior General Manager of Eveready , Ms. Madhumita Basu- had explained the consequence of a corporate vision statement, he said," I have spent as many as 8 hours in the classroom sessions trying to explain what a vision statement is. But even after that the students have not been able to grasp I properly. But one clipping and everyone here has a firm grasp on what a vision statement is and should be"
This review was written by Ram Mohan of The Telegraph .

Sleepless in Calcutta

Its always a great feeling when you do something for your alma matter which has helped you reach top a respectable position in the society.. thats my feeling when I work for the event " Sleepless in Calcutta" , a event relating to the management concepts which can be unearthed from the popular movies. And also I feel this will be the first management seminar to be held in a movie hall... We are organising this event on the behalf of the Bharathidasan Institute of Management Trichy Alumni Association (Calcutta Chapter).
The event will take place in Inox at Forum Mall in Calcutta. We have invited three speakers who will take movie clips from various popular movies and elucidate the management concepts hidden in them.
The main brain behind the event is Abhisek from the 16th batch of BIM who has been sleepless for the past 2 months to organise this event. The event is on 22nd January Sunday.

Guys Must be Crazy

“These Guys must be crazy yaar”, Asha suddenly remarked while adoring herself in the mirror.

Her roommate priya who was busily playing Minesweeper in her laptop, turned to Asha and asked, “c’mon, ma’m wat happened..you talking about Guys suddenly……watz the matter?”

Asha : True yaar, these guys must be crazy…… I think they do all sort of stupid things if they fall in love
Priya : aaha, Asha…what happened pa, suddenly you talking about love…who is that idiot ? Asha : Hey keep quiet ok! Me already in anger……. You don’t try to tease me further
Priya : hahaha, you angry… see yourself in the mirror…… your drooling is quite apparent… Tell me whoz that guy who made you talk about love all of the sudden
Asha : our next cubicle northie yaar, Vikram I mean…… He is following me wherever I go
Priya (surprised) : What you mean Vikram? Hey come so many girls in our office are drooling about him…….. don’t just blush ok? You shouldn’t lie too much esp when you are seeing urself in the mirror
Asha : hey come on yaar, you know, that day in FC, I went to wash my hands. All other taps were free only. But this guy purposely waited and came to the tap where I washed my hands after I went…
Priya : hmmph.. Big deal……. This is more feebler than BSNL signal… (shakes her head) I cant accept this as a Love signal
Asha : wait wait. Even I didn’t think it as a big issue. But yesterday no, after finished with my dinner, I missed my mobile in the desk while leaving. When I came back to pick it up, I noticed this Vikram picking up my paper towel and put in his pocket. What would you say for this? Priya : Really??? Do u mean it
Asha : hey true yaar…… thatz why I said…… these guys are all crazy…… they tend to do all sorts of stupid things for love and romance
Priya : aah..dont tell me you didn’t like that
Asha : hehe thatz a different story J ….. you come with me to Food court today.. I’ll show you live action today

That afternoon........Priya and Asha dine together in the Food court. Vikram who enters the Food court at the same time, takes the seat just behind them.

Asha : Look where he is sitting
Priya : O.K O.K.. Relax Both finish their lunch and go to wash their hand.

As they return they see Vikram standing near the place where they had their lunch

Asha : Now see what he does
Priya : Wait , wait
Vikram looks here and there, after getting convinced no one is around, picks up the tumbler that was used by Asha during her lunch.
Asha : (triumphant smile) What do yaa say now?
Priya : Yep yep, Guys must be crazy only…… I will go and catch that Vikram red handedly Asha : hey relax priya, Me feeling shy
Priya : hello this is not a murali film story to keep postponing love proposal until a railway station climax. You just wait here
Priya straightly goes to Vikram, who is quiet surprised to see her..
Vikram : Hi priya..how do u do
Priya : Dei, what are u doing da
Vikram : err..whatz the matter pri?
Priya : Watz the tumbler u are holding in ur hand
Vikram : oh this one ah? This is your friend Asha’s work. Arrey, she is so careless yaar… Whenever she goes to wash her hands in the wash basin, she leaves the tap open and let water go waste. She never disposes of the paper towel, once she is done with lunch and leaves it there itself. See even now, she doesn’t even care to keep the tumbler back in the place. How many times you expect me to keep reminding in mails as part of the cleanliness initiative of the week. Nobody cares.. see, for being a volunteer what sort of job I have to do. Regardless of the number of posts in the bulletin about etiquette nobody cares to listen…”

Saying this, a disgusted vikram goes to pick up the tumbler in the next desk. An apparently shocked Asha could not mutter any other words except mumbling
“GUYS MUST BE REALLY CRAZY……………..”

(Thanks to my friend Zaheer Abbas for sending this one.. I really liked this one , so it finds a place here)

Happy New Year 2006

Hope everyone reading this piece of writing had a great new year bash....!!!

My new year did not start on a great note.. what would say when you go to a disc and your entry is turned down even though you had an invite from the Disc but you did not have a girl who can accompany you.. I faced just the same, I had gone to one of the famous joints to celebrate the new year but only to be turned down as I did not have a female partner.. Though much is spoken about discrimination of women no one really comes forward to speak for men...
Ok lets leave that.. let me atleast follow my new year resolution " Think Positive"
How do I take this positively..?
  • I was not allowed 'coz they did not want me to waste my energy
  • T was not allowed 'coz the security felt I was too good to drink

And you guys can pour in your grey cells so that I may be able to get a " positive" thing out of this episode.

Otherwise it was a great beginning ...And hope this year fulfills all our dreams and hopes.
